The human intestine – a masterpiece!
Having a length of 8 metres, it has a surface of nearly 400 square metres (equal to 1.5 tennis courts).
It accomplishes a unique digestive performance. Tons of liquid are transported through the body.
It splits up the food’s components so that the body can process them. Its other tasks include body detoxification, the production of secretions, the formation of immune cells (the immune defence of the body) and hormone production (serotonin).
The abdominal brain, the plexus solaris, a nerve plexus, which is located directly behind the midriff, is a main knot which switches nerve connections to the central nerve system and into the body. The whole function of the intestine is steered from here.
The plexus solaris is highly sensitive and prone to failure. One hit can cause the immediate death of a person. Chronic stress causes the reduction of the immune defence, the development of intestinal skin barrier disruption and can cause chronic intestinal inflammation. Also, the digestion is of importance for the performance of the brain, concentration and visual capacity.
A healthy and smoothly functioning intestine prevents pathogenic substances from entering the body and is one of the basic conditions for our health.
